What is Eco Design 2022?
In response to the implementation of the UK government’s Clean Air Strategy, courtesy of DEFRA, the stove industry has introduced Eco Design 2022. As of 2022, it is illegal to manufacture and sell stoves that do not meet the Eco Design 2022 regulations. The DEFRA initiative strives to significantly reduce emissions and pollution, alongside improving air quality.
Three key areas will be tackled as a result of the Eco Design 2022 initiative for stoves:
- Update legislation on Smoke Control Zones
- Limit the sale of polluting fuels
- Improve the efficiency of air quality
The European-wide initiative was mapped out by DEFRA in 2015, ready for implementation on January 1st 2022.
Eco Design 2022 Benefits
The tougher and more rigorous standards will yield a number of benefits such as:
- Minimum efficiency levels; plus
- Maximum levels of: Carbon monoxide (CO); organic gaseous compounds (OGC); nitrogen oxides (NOx); particulate matter (PM).
What Does Eco Design 2022 Mean for Stove Manufacturers?
The Eco Design 2022 initiative has led to stove manufacturers having to adapt the way they produce stoves, meaning that they must not make stoves that breach the new guidelines.
In preparation for the Eco Design 2022 directive, a number of further initiatives and accreditations have been introduced to the market to guide consumers and ensure manufacturers adhere to the new legal requirements.
A Government Backed Certification
Developed to ensure stove manufacturers are independently regulated and can meet the new legislature requirements clearSkies is recognised by both the UK government and its respective devolved governments such as the Welsh Assembly, as well as the Greater London Authority.
Through independent testing, clearSkies approved stoves produce up to 90% less particulate emissions than open fire and use much less fuel, resulting in them being much more cost-efficient to run. Moreover, clearSkies approved stove appliances produce less than 80% of emissions than a stove that is 10 or more years old.
