Multi fuel Stoves

Multi Fuel & Solid Fuel Stoves

Multi fuel stoves are one of the most popular choices for householders who would like to install a real fire. They offer a clean and efficient system of burning and the aesthetic effect of flickering flames. A multifuel stove can burn different varieties of solid fuels whether wood, peat, turf, coal, anthracite or other smokeless briquettes and fuels. These stoves are more efficient heat producers than open fires. Between 75 and 90 percent of the fuel used in these stoves is converted into heat for the room rather than escaping through the chimney as in the case of an open fire. But wood will burn better on a wood burning stove than the multifuel version.

Smokeless fuel is always the best option to use in this type of solid fuel stove .It burns at a higher temperature and fewer of its tars condense around the chimney flue than is the case with wood burning. Any kind of industrial or oil based fuel should be avoided.

Multifuel stoves include a grate and riddling controls. The grate allows air to flow through the base of the fuel bed and into the stove. This is crucial for coal burning as the air passage has to be kept as free from ash as possible, so the riddling controls allow the ash to fall into a pan underneath.

If the multi fuel stove is to be fitted into an existing fireplace and chimney in an old house, it's always a good idea to have the chimney inspected and the flue lined prior to the stoves installation.
