Frequently Asked Questions

The answer to this question depends on where you live. If you live in a large city or in an urban environment, the likelihood is that your wood burning or multi fuel stove has to be DEFRA approved. Especially if you want to avoid any hefty fines.

DEFRA exempt stoves are modern appliances that are very different to older stoves or open fires. They are airtight for precisely controlled airflow and usually feature airflow systems that provide secondary burning of gas and smoke particles before these can go up the chimney. The result is not only a cleaner burn with clearer, barely visible smoke, but also much higher heating efficiency – requiring far less logs to heat the room. All DEFRA exempt stoves are independently verified by HETAS to ensure they meet these strict requirements.

Our DEFRA stoves are supplied by leading manufacturers such as Esse, Stovax, Purevision and Jotul to name a few.

Sunvision stoves are another DEFRA approved brand.

To know if your stove is DEFRA exempt, there will be a logo which should be visible (while purchasing), that will be matched with a title or a specification that it is an approved appliance for use in a smoke controlled area. This means approved fuels such as wood can now legally be burnt.
