Woodburner Ban UK - Dispelling the Haze

Since the introduction of the DEFRA Clean Air Strategy, many homeowners have posed the question: Are wood burning stoves banned? In short no, but there will be some regulatory changes, which are certainly worth knowing about whether you’re a manufacturer, retailer or consumer.

Can I Still Use My Log Burner After 2022?

If your log burner is already installed, then as current legislation plans stand, yes, all log burners can still be used in 2022. However, the changes are at market level, with plans for only the cleanest wood and log burners allowed on the market by 2022.

Who is DEFRA and What is the DEFRA Clean Air Strategy?

DEFRA is the acronym used for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - this is a UK government department responsible for protecting the country’s natural environment.

The DEFRA Clean Air Strategy was implemented to tackle air pollution in the UK. However, the emergence of this has since caused a lot of confusion and panic amongst consumers.

The Clean Air Strategy outlines rules which restrict the use of unclean solid fuels and only permits the use of ‘ready to burn’ logs on wood burning stoves.

As part of the wider Environment Bill, which is yet to receive Royal Assent, there are various actions which are designed to reduce emissions and pollution and enable all aspects of government to reach their targets by 2030.

What is the Future for Wood Burning Stoves?

Essentially, the future of wood burning stoves will involve maximised efficiency. Log burner models will continue to have to be adapted in order to adhere to regulations across the globe, country by country.

Certainly for the time being, an outright wood-burner ban isn’t on the cards.
